The Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday night razed a wall inside the Moulana Ali Jauhar University in Rampur and recovered over 1000 books from 200-year-old Raza Oriental College (Madrasa Alia).

The police recovered the stolen books by digging into the walls of the Jauhar Ali University building.

The video of hammering a wall of the University is doing rounds on social media.

The police raided the premises of the university on the basis of the input provided by the two aides of the Samajwadi Party leader’s son Abdullah Azam who were arrested earlier, a police official said.

Additional Superintendent of police (ASP) Sansar Singh told reporters that the books allegedly stolen from Madrasa Alia have been recovered from Jauhar University. Books are being taken out by breaking the wall, he said.

Earlier on Sunday, Rampur police had arrested the SP MLA Abdullah Azam’s aides for their involvement in a gambling racket. During interrogation, they revealed about the books and the cleaning machine.

Maulana Muhammad Ali Jauhar University is run by a trust headed by former Uttar Pradesh cabinet minister and Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.

The books were stolen from Madrasa Alia in 2019 from the Raza Oriental College (Madrasa Alia) which was established by the Nawab of Rampur in 1774.

In 2019, 9,633 books were stolen from Madrasa Alia. Out of which, 6,000 books were yet to be recovered.

Azam Khan is an accused in this case of book theft.

Zubair Ahmad, the principal of Raza Oriental College, had registered an FIR against Azam Khan for forcibly occupying the college building in 2016. After that, 10,633 rare books and manuscripts in the college library went missing.

The books were taken to the Jauhar Ali University library, the principal alleged in his complaint.

Later, around 2,500 books were recovered from the Mumtaz library of Jauhar Ali University on July 31, 2019 and four people were arrested.
