After two important ACC wins, NC State gets another opportunity on Saturday to improve its NCAA tournament resume.

Miami (14-2, 5-1 ACC) will be a different challenge for the Wolfpack (13-4, 3-3). At No. 36 in the NET ranking, the Hurricanes would not count as “Quadrant 1” win.

NC State has picked up two straight Q1 wins over Duke (84-60 on Jan. 4) and at Virginia Tech (73-69 on Jan. 7).

Q1 wins have the most value to the NCAA tournament selection committee. NC State is 2-3 in Q1 games this season. They’re not the only criteria for making the 68-team field.

Miami, a half a game behind Clemson for the ACC lead, has a sterling 5-1 record in Q1 games. Jim Larranaga, in his 12th season in Miami, has the Canes in position to win the ACC and make the NCAA tournament.

What you do against the other teams in the field matters. How you close the season does, too.

In addition to having the week off, which isn’t always a good thing, Kevin Keatts also needs to fight complacency with his team. For the first time this season, NC State is included in ESPN’s “Bracketology” projection.

Joe Lunardi’s picks don’t matter but don’t tell that to thousands of college basketball fans who think they do.

NC State already lost to Miami this season. The Wolfpack had a 43-34 lead at the half on Dec. 10 but its defense fell apart in the second half of an 80-73 loss.

Guards Isaiah Wong and Nigel Pack lead the way for Larranaga but wing Jordan Miller was a problem (25 points) in the first meeting.

NC State needs to have the same defensive intensity as it had from the jump against Duke and Virginia Tech to pay Miami back.

The schedule, by the way, is about to hit a bit of a lull — in terms of Q1 opportunities. The road game at UNC (No. 32) on Jan. 21 but the next one after that is at Virginia on Feb. 7.

So only two of the next 10 games will be Q1 chances. Even worse, six of the remaining 14 ACC games are either Q3 or Q4 games. Yikes.

The way Miami is playing this season, the Canes will likely end up in the top 30, so Saturday’s game will likely be a Q1 game by Selection Sunday.

And that’s what matters but only if it’s a win.
